Shelter Care - Bitterroot Youth Home

Program Description
The Bitterroot Youth Home was and is established to offer an alternative to the streets and unnecessary detention for youngsters who need protection, have committed minor offensives, face a family crisis or whose living situation has broken down. While in our care, youth receive quality physical care, crisis stabilization, individual counseling and case planning while able to attend school or work and do community activities. A highly trained staff assesses each child’s long-term needs, helps to reunite them with their family when it is appropriate or assists in alternative longer-term placement when necessary.

The Home is located in Hamilton at 903 S 2ndSt

Program Structure
At the Bitterroot Youth Home, young people receive:

  • A safe, stable and creative environment staffed by Therapeutic Child Care Workers, a Home Manager, a Program Coordinator and a Program Director;
  • Individual and group therapy that promotes healthy emotional expression, increases self-esteem and teaches anger management and other inter-personal skills;
  • A structured daily program, including school, recreational and cultural activities;
  • A privilege system that teaches social skills and behavior management;
  • Access to community services, including education, professional therapy and health care.

Placement Criteria
Children referred to the Bitterroot Youth Home are 10 to 18 year-olds who are in crisis due to family conflict, abuse or neglect, emotional issues, school problems, or legal troubles. The Home accepts referrals from youth court, child protection workers, mental health professionals, chemical dependency counselors or anyone knowing of a child in need of shelter or assistance.
