Shelter Care - Flathead Youth Home

Program Description
In 1997, Youth Homes opened the first and only emergency, short-term shelter care facility in the Flathead Valley. Located in Kalispell, the Flathead Youth Home offers an alternative to the streets or detention for youth, who face a family crisis, have acted out (for attention) or whose placement has broken down. Lengths of stay average 21 days, can be as long as 3 months but we always hope to resolve things and move the youth within 30 days. Youth receive caring, individualized treatment in a safe and structured environment while attending school or maintaining employment. Highly trained staff assess each resident’s needs and provide crisis stabilization, counseling, case planning and case coordination to facilitate appropriate longer-term placement or family reunification.

Youth enjoy the safety and support
they receive at the Home

Program Structure
While at the Home, youngsters receive:

  • Safe, stable environment with Therapeutic Youth Care Workers, a Home Manager and a Program Director;
  • Individual and group counseling to promote healthy expression of emotion, insight, positive peer support, behavioral understanding and improved self-esteem;
  • Structured daily program, including school, employment, and cultural and recreational activities;
  • A level-based system of privileges that promotes social skills and self-management;
  • Access to community services including recreation, cultural, educational, medical, chemical dependency services, mental health services and opportunities for service learning.

Placement Criteria
Appropriate referrals to the Flathead Youth Home include youngsters, ages 10 to 18, who need to be out of their home for safety, mental health, guidance and supervision, case planning, or crisis stabilization. Referrals are accepted from Family Services, Mental Health, Youth Court, Chemical Dependency Programs or any concerned individual who knows of a young person in need.

At the request of United Way of Flathead County, other concerned Flathead citizens and agencies, Youth Homes, Inc. was invited into the communities of the Flathead and developed this program—our 1st group home development outside of Missoula County in 1997. The Program is guided by a local assistance Board to insure that the Home reflects the values of the community it serves and is built into the fabric of that community.
