Shelter Care - Shirley M. Miller Attention Home

Program Description
Created in 1976, the Attention Home offers an alternative to detention or the streets for adolescents who have committed minor offensives, face a short-term family crisis, are struggling with addiction or have had their placement break down. Teens receive caring, individual treatment while attending school or doing work. Highly trained staff stabilizes the young person, provides daily attention and guidance, assists with case planning and prepares each child for family reunification, if appropriate, or other placement if necessary.

The Shirley M. Miller Attention Home is an8-bed home overlooking the Clark Fork River just west of downtown Missoula.

Program Structure
At the Attention Home, adolescents receive:

  • A safe, stable and creative environment with five full-time Child Care Workers, a Home Manager, a Professional counselor and a Program Director in the Home.
  • Individual and group therapy aimed at promoting healthy emotional expression, improving insight, increasing self-esteem and improving anger management and other inter-personal skills.
  • A structured daily program, including school and recreational and cultural activities, with a graduated privilege system that teaches social skills and behavior.
  • Access to community services, including professional therapy and health care.

Placement Criteria
Youngsters appropriate for emergency placement at the Shirley M. Miller Attention Home are 10 to 18 year-olds who are in crisis and cannot return home or remain in a placement due to emotional crisis, family conflict, a lack of supervision, abuse or neglect issues, a need for assessment or trouble with the law. The Attention Home accepts referrals for any child in need of shelter or assistance, from an agency or family. The average stay at the Attention Home is 21 days but stays range from overnight to a couple of months. We are able to successfully address and resolve family crisis in over 80% of all cases. To date, nearly 6,000 young people have been helped at our Missoula Attention Home.
